Description
The Electron Cyclotron Heating and Current Drive system (EC HCD) plays a crucial role in all different plasma phase operations to achieve the objectives of ITER.
The European contribution to the ITER EC HCD system includes the procurement of the main part of the HV power supplies, six gyrotrons, all four upper launchers, all the ex-vessel waveguides, and the plant control system. It also concerns the integration of the sub-systems in ITER, carried out under the collaboration and guidance of the ITER International Organization with the aim of maximizing the performance of the EC HCD system. Examples of such optimizations are the enhanced voltage dynamics and accuracy provided by the HV power supplies, installation measures to improve the EMC overall behavior, inherent design safety measures, gyrotron beam current control, advanced RF calculations to assess the launcher power handling capabilities under different situations, and the modular and reliable control methods.
The European EC HCD parts for ITER are currently under different stages, from final design and manufacturing, to installation and commissioning. In this paper, the status, results and remaining challenges will be presented.
