Description

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multipurpose experiment, primarily for neutrino mass ordering determination. The central detector is filled with 20 kton of liquid scintillator and is being built in a 700 meter deep underground laboratory. The outer part of surrounding the CD, the detector is filled with ultrapure water and equipped with ~2400 MCP-PMTs (20 inches) to form the Water Cherenkov detector. The goal of this detector is to detect muon with the goal of reducing the muon-induced background. The water Cherenkov detector walls and the central detector external surface are coated with Tyvek reflector to increase the light collection efficiency. The pool wall is covered with HDPE lining to prevent radon diffusion from rocks and keep the water clean. Magnetic field shielding coils are placed to reduce the earth's magnetic field and keep the required performance for all 20k CD and WCD 20'' PMTs. The muon detection efficiency is anticipated to be >99% for the water Cherenkov detector. The muon-induced fast neutron background can be controlled at the level of ~0.1/day. This poster will present the current status and performance of the Water Cherenkov Detector.
